It is a dream

Francis J. Thompson in"A Portrait of the Artist Asleep," Western Review, XIV (Summer 1950), 245-253, was one of the first scholars to realize that the dreamer in Finnegans Wake is not HCE, but James Joyce, alias Stephen Dedaius in many character manifestations.
